Friends of St Catherine’s Church – New Governing Document Proposal
CHARITY INCORPORATED ORGANISATION CIO
The Friends committee is following many other charities in suggesting to our members we transfer the Friends from being a simple unincorporated organisation into a CIO. The CIO was created for charities like the Friends to give the charity trustees the same protection as in a limited company. The committee of the Friends currently are personally liable for any costs incurred in the unlikely event of, for instance, a serious accident at an event. We belive this is the right path for the Friends, but it is you, the members, who will decide. We have drafted a new Governing Document using a Charities Commission template. This updates the old document. A hard copy will be placed inside St Catherines Church for members to read.
We intend to have our AGM on May 7th where you will vote, firstly on whether the Friends should become a CIO, and secondly on the text of the new Governing document. If you vote ‘yes’ to both, we create a ‘new’ charity and transfer the assets from the current Friends. Afterwards pretty much everything will be the same – we will still be a member’s charity where you vote on the big issues.
